Vladimir Lossky in "Orthodox Theology" (pg 47-48) makes a helpful distinction in this respect. God's work of nature and God's work of will are two distinct concepts. The generation of the Son and the procession of the Spirit are work of nature (essence) whereas creation is work of will. (Fr Romanides here echos Lossky, "When God created the world, He did not create the world through His essence, but through His energy and at will.") The work of nature is not to be understood as work in the conventional sense of this term, but as the being of God. To take it a step further, God in His essence is beyond being, beyond existence, beyond work. But I digress. What matters here is that we see the distinction between essense and energy as part and parcel of orthodox trinitarian theology. Generation and procession become very important as they relate to the Father, as the unifying principle. This is critical in contradistinction to the essence, God's being, understood as the unifying prinicple as seen in western influenced theologies. Such western conceptions obscure the distinctions of the Persons, work of nature and the work of will. This makes God's relation to His creation quite problematic. He becomes so different from creation as to become removed and distant, or else God becomes part of creation.

What a wonderful and essential excerpt to post.

We need more of these testimonies on the importance of frequent Communion to be read by the faithful around the world.
